Volunteer Positions Include:

Qualifications

  • You must be between the ages of 21 and 45 to apply.
  • Your employer may be contacted to verify that you are allowed to leave work to respond on calls.
  • If selected you will be subject to a physical exam at our expense and a confidential background check.
  • New firefighters must attend and pass the South Dakota certified firefighter course as well as several online courses requiring extra time.
  • Firefighters train the 2nd and last Monday of each month and attend a monthly meeting on the 3rd Monday of each month.
  • Other training opportunities include state and district fire schools and local classes.

Benefits

  • Stipend

    Firefighters receive a stipend for emergency calls and training. Volunteers receive a pension benefit upon retirement from the department and established years of service and qualifications have been met.

  • Equipment Provided

    Needed equipment and annual physicals are provided by YFD.

  • Insurance Provided

    Accident and worker’s compensation insurance are also provided. Members have access to an Employee Assistance Program.

  • Family Events

    Families of YFD voulenteers are invited to the annual picnic as well as an Easter Egg hunt, a Christmas party, and much more. Members also receive an individual annual pass to the Summit Activities Center.

Firefighters Auxiliary

Spouses are invited to join the firefighters auxiliary. The auxiliary participates in special community projects, retired members dinner and retired auxiliary banquet, and provide firefighters food and refreshments at fires.

Thank you for considering joining the Yankton Volunteer Fire Department! Here’s what you need to know:

  • Commitment: As a firefighter, you’ll attend drills, meetings, and training sessions. While we prioritize family and work, your presence at as many events as possible is appreciated.
  • Response: While not every call requires your attendance, we rely on members to respond to most of them, as we operate around the clock.
  • Involvement: We value family participation and host various social gatherings, including a family picnic. Partners can also join the Yankton Firefighter’s Auxiliary for mutual support.
  • Rewards: Being part of our department offers a chance to give back to Yankton and be part of a proud tradition.
