Service to the community

How did we begin?
The Yankton Fire Department began in 1874 as South Dakota's first Bucket Brigade.
The North Side Fire CO. No.3 was organized on October 25, 2025.

The Yankton Volunteer Fire Department has two full-time employees, one part-time employee, and forty volunteer firefighters who are on call and ready to respond around the clock, 24 hours a day.

Crews gather for scheduled training on two Monday evenings each month, plus any additional opportunities that come up.

A department business meeting takes place on another Monday evening each month, a reminder of the time and dedication volunteering requires. Many of our firefighters have served for 15, 20, 25 years and more.

Social events are a big part of who we are.

Each October during National Fire Prevention Week, we host a public open house in the evening. Throughout that week, many of our firefighters visit public and private schools to reach hundreds of students and teach them why fire safety and prevention matter.

The department also holds an annual dinner for the employers of our volunteer firefighters, thanking them for generously allowing their firefighter employees to leave work when the pager sounds.

A second annual dinner welcomes retired firefighters back to the station, honoring the years of volunteer service they gave before hanging up their fire hats.

Our volunteers run annual fundraisers to raise the revenue that supports the volunteer association, which is not covered by any city or rural budget.

Current fundraisers include a donation request mail-out sent to all property owners in our service area.
